$5 Quilt
NOTE: If you picked up your block kit on Saturday, please note! There was a minor catastrophe when we cut them -- I calculated wrong on color #3. (Math was always my worst subject!) This only will matter IF YOU ARE NOT USING PHOTOS IN YOUR BLOCKS! So, we have the extra fabric you will need to make the blocks here. If you can't come by to pick it up, give us a call and we'll mail it to you. To repeat, YOU ONLY NEED EXTRA FABRIC IF YOU ARE NOT USING PHOTOS!

I am soooooo sorry to have made this mistake! I guess I should be happy that this is the first cutting mistake in the last four years, but I'm really, really sorry it happened -- forgive me!

How to Print Photos on FaFirst, remember that this can be really quite simple. Photos can be taken from a digital camera or from emails. If you have a 35mm photo, just scan the photo with a scanner. When choosing photos, remember that it will be cropped into a square. If you really want to use a photo that can’t be cut into a square later, you can always add a fabric border around it.

Next, you’re going to simply print the photo onto Printed Treasures Photo Fabric. Put the photo fabric into the printer so that it will print on the fabric side. Use plain paper setting on your printer with your regular ink cartridges. Tell your printer to size the photos 5” x 7”, which is a very common photo size. You will be able to get two photos per sheet. Remember that the photos will be cropped down to 4-½” (cut measurements) for all months except December and January. (Please see instructions below for December and January photos.) Print out your photos onto plain paper first to make sure they will be the right size after being cropped.

Let the fabric dry for a minute or so. Peel the paper backing off the photo and rinse under the faucet. Let it dry.

Then cut the photos so that it is the correct size for your quilt block. Don’t forget to add the seam allowance!!! Most of your pictures for this project will be 4-½” square cut (see Dec. and Jan. below).

Now, onto a little more advanced way of doing things if you’re feeling frisky. It’s really quite simple -- you can do it! Try using digital photo software to enhance your photos. I really like a simple-to-use free photo editing program that you can download from the internet called Picasa 2. It is from google.com, so I trust it. It will automatically find photos on your computer every time you open the program!

With Picasa, you can crop photos, change the color and contrast and more. Under “Effects,” you can even add the sepia tone effect, which is what I did for the Mary Rose colorway to give it an old-fashioned look. I also added the “Film Grain” effect on my Mary Rose photos to make them even more antique-looking.

December and January Photo Instructions:

Photos will be on point (in a diamond shape). For Dec. and Jan. only, the size is 4-7/8” cut on point. You will need to add triangles around the outside edges of the photos to create the center block, so cut two 4" squares and then cut them in half, making a total of four triangles. Sew the triangles onto the sides of the photo. It will be just a hair bigger than 6-1/2", so trim this block down to 6-1/2" square.

If you are worried about getting photos on point, you can make December and January’s blocks without photos.
