Bluebird of Happiness Thread Painting

Included in class fee:  Tulle net, bird pattern, tree pattern to be handed out in class or if possible pick up in store after you have paid for class. This way you can trace bird onto smooth side of Sulky “Super Solvy” and trace tree and flowers onto fusible web paper side. After tracing tree and flowers  press onto the wrong side of your chosen fabric and cut out, doing this at home will give you more time to thread paint.

-fusible web (like wonder under or Heat n Bond Lite) for tree trunk and flowers fused on back of fabric

-Small sharp scissors
-free motion foot -- please check your manual or dealer for this foot.
-machine needles Microtex (sharp) or jeans needle in size # 80/12
-6 inch German (¼” high) wood embroidery hoop, no larger than 7 inches
-mono filament thread (invisible) clear if your machine does well with this thread OR 50 or 60 weight thread for bobbin
-40 wt. polyester 60 weight machine embroidery thread (poly sheen) various color values of blue for the bird. Polyester machine embroidery thread may also be used  .
Color suggestions for thread: royal blue, periwinkle blue, light, medium, dark blue, and medium purple, medium gray.  Black for pupil and cream for highlights, dark brown for feet, light tan to represent chest.
Tree suggested colors: sage, brown 3 values of color brown, 2 shades of green to represent stems and grass.
-Fat quarter floral fabric (small flowers) fussy cut after it has been fused onto fusible web which will be placed at base of tree
-fat quarter (batik) representing tree bark
-background fabric cut to 23×27;  bird, tree and flowers will be placed on this background
-1 yd backing fabric
-thin batting
-fabric for binding; may use contrast or same fabric as backing

-Sulky “Fuse n Stitch”  stabilizer cut to 19×21. (To prevent puckering of fabric while thread painting the tree and flowers, grass and stems.)
-Sewing machine capable of lowering feed dog recently serviced or cleaned in the bobbin and feed dog area, sewing machine manual
Recommend: “The Thread Director” eliminates thread breakage and shredding of thread during thread painting
Optional: stencil burning tool if you have one
Optional: knee lift if available, extended table for machine if available

Homework: not an option
Sulky ”Super Solvy”, cut to 14x14 (2 pieces)
Cut background fabric 23×27 inches
Cut Sulky “Fuse n Stitch” 19×21 inches
Press receiving fabric to warm up before applying Sulky “Fuse n Stitch” stabilizer using a hot iron, shiny side down onto the wrong side of fabric. Lift and press when fusing holding iron in place for 12 to 15 seconds.
Trace tree pattern onto fusible web then press onto the wrong side tree fabric and cut out along the lines
Press fusible web onto the wrong side of flower fabric and cut out flowers.

Know how to adjust upper thread tension,
know how to change stitch width for zig zag stitch, please know if your sewing machine will sew with invisible thread in the bobbin prior to class if not you can use the 50 weight cotton thread in bobbin
