Collage Quilting

Do you have a collage quilt pattern, and not quite sure how to begin your fabric placing journey? Dig into your fabric scrap bins, grab that new floral fabric you have been wanting to use, and come join us for this 2-day session. It is possible you may not finish your collage within these 2 days, however you will learn the skills necessary to complete your project at home!

Course level: Confident beginner

Instructor: Brooke Stambersky (248-819-9900 or brooke.stambersky@gmail.com)

Supplies:

  • Collage pattern (recommend participants purchasing a Laura Heine pattern, available by special order from Asheville Cotton Co).

  • Fabric- the more fabric the better!!

    • Fussy cutting, have fabric with motifs and flowers. Background of fabric is not important, the motifs are!

    • Bring a variety of colors, light and dark colors.

    • Fabric that has motif’s and flowers in various sizes (large, medium and small).

    • Small amounts of a lot of fabric works great! Don’t forget to look in your scrap fabric bag.

    • Underlay fabric- this is the fabric that will be the shape of your animal or person, and may peek through your collage. The underlay fabric can be solid or print, but shouldn’t take away from your collage design when peeking through.

  • Background of pattern- Some patterns have collage patterns, and some need to be sewn together. For the patterns that need to be sewn together, come to class with this completed.

  • Pattern ease or Voile- you can use pattern ease or solid color voile to build your collage on OR you can build your collage directly on your background fabric.

  • Embellishments you would like to add to your collage, not required but nice touch (crystals, buttons, charms, etc.).

  • Several yards of Steam a Seam 2 regular or Lite Steam a Seam 2

  • Applique pressing sheet

  • Fabric Fuse

  • Paper towel (after each press, wipes applique pressing sheet with paper towel to clean off Steam a Seam residue)

  • Small iron and ironing pad

  • Scissors- micro serrated edge, recommend Karen Kay Buckley brand

  • Sharpie- black

  • Pigma Micron Pen- fine tip, black ink

  • Participants read pattern to ensure they have any additional supplies the pattern requires.

  • Lunch (we will break for 30 mins for lunch)

  • No sewing machines required for class! You will quilt your collage at home.
