Step 7:7A) Embroidered Inset Version:
Either embroider design on light gray/cream fabric and then cut it down to 4-1/2” x 5-1/2”, or cut the piece to 4-1/2” x 5-1/2” and embroider after the additional small squares are added.

7B) Cut (54) 1-1/2” squares from a variety of scrappy fabrics (small squares in kits).
7C) Without embroidery: Piece all these squares (9) across and (6) down using a scant 1/4” seam. With embroidery: Piece squares and the embroidered piece so that the embroidered piece is centered as shown.
7D) Sew a 6” x 9-1/2” piece of fabric (it won’t be seen, so any fabric will do) to one long side of the pieced squares and press open. Cut this whole unit down to 9” x 12”. Fold in half WRONG sides together so that this pocket measures 6” x 9”.
7E) Continue on with Step 8 in the original pattern.
