Thread Painting with Chris Eichner - "Chickadee Song"


1. Chickadee Songs Panel, available from Asheville Cotton Co.

2. Free motion foot (aka hopping foot, darning foot) check manual or dealer for your machine

3. Cut Away stabilizer, Sulky or Bernina, non-woven, non fusible stabilizer

4. Straight pins 

5. Small sharp scissors

6. Small pair sharp tweezers 

7. Large eye sharp darning sewing needle, for bobbin work to pull thread to wrong side

8. Top stitch sewing machine needle 90/14 or Metallic 90/14 and Microtex 80/12

9. Optional- 6 inch wood embroidery hoop with set screw 

10. Optional- Light box 

11. Marking pen e.g. Frixon or clover 

12. Extra bobbins fill ½ full with medium green, medium pink, black, gray 50 weight

13. Optional Bobbin Work case for your machine if available 

14. Sewing machine manual 

15. Extension table is helpful 


*Thread painting class will focus on bobbin work using Perle Cotton #5 thread which Chris will provide with class fee. A Sulky 30 weight Cotton Blendable is needed to pull Perle Cotton through to wrong side and to anchor down the specialty threads. Choose color complimentary to cone flower center, leaves and petals.

1. Bobbin fill such as Cotton & Steele 50 wt. cotton; Sulky 60 wt poylite polyester or Aurifil 50 wt., or Mettler 50 wt. cotton 

2. Machine Embroidery threads, suggestions: Sulky Blendables 30 wt., 50 wt. Mettler cotton silk finish, 50 wt. Aurifil or your favorite brand. Sulky 30 wt. Blendables are variegated and provide nice color changes for leaves and petals. Sulky Sliver Metallic 145-8040 and additional Sulky Sliver metallics are available at Asheville Cotton Co for additional detail and shimmer!

3. Specialty thread for bobbin work will be provided by Chris included in class fee.

HOMEWORK: please do this prior to class.

● Cut apart the small scene of chickadee with cone flowers from the panel. See the shop sample 

● Fill bobbin ½ full with green, pink, black, gray see colors in supply list under bobbins

● Sew 3 inch border of muslin to all 4 sides, this provides easier management of piece during thread painting 

● Attach “Cut Away Stabilizer”, to the wrong side of panel after attaching the muslin extensions, securing with pins in corners and sides 

● With your panel prepared place with right side against a light box and trace onto the stabilized side (with frixon pen or marking pen) the outline of cone flower center and some petals of flowers, if you do not have light box I’ll have one available in class for you to use 

● CLEAN your machine and oil (if it is a machine that needs oil) prior to class. 

● BE CERTAIN to know how to drop FEED DOG 


● Please bring a bag lunch or snack as only ½ hour for lunch
