"Year of Art Springtime" Thread Painting with Chris Eichner



Supply List

1. Year of Art “panel”, see sample; cut panel in 1⁄2; leaving the black border (available at Asheville Cotton Co)
2. Stabilizer “Sulky Cut Away Plus”, non woven, non fusible 1 yd. Cut 3 inches wider than panel for all sides, pin in place on the wrong side of panel prior to class
3. small sharp scissors, Snips are preferable when cutting threads close to right side
4. wooden hoop, 61⁄2 to 9 “, maximum size with screw. Make sure it will slide under your free motion foot, for sewing space; smaller hoop (bump against arm of machine)
5. Must have Free motion foot/darning foot
6. Topstitch 90/14 needle, more than one in case of breakage
7. Sharpie fine point pen or Pigma fine point
8. Bobbins 1⁄2 filled with Cotton & Steele 50 wt. thread, or Metller 50 wt. or Aurifil thread,
9. neutral, medium, dark to compliment top threads
10. silicone lubricant (Sewers Aid) or Bernina Silicone lubricant for sewing with Metallic threads
11. Recommend a light if machine light is not bright
12. Optional extension cord, pillow to sit on. Seats are low and this eliminates shoulders from straining
13. Threads: recommended
“Sulky” 40 wt. rayon, “Sulky” polyester 60 wt., “Mettler” 50 weight. “Sulky” 30 wt.Blendables
• Aurifil 50 wt. All these threads can be used for thread painting your choice.
• “Glamore” metallic threads which sparkle or your favorite brand of metallic thread will require the silicone to keep threads from breaking or shredding. Gold metallic for sun rays or
• “Sulky SLIVER” Opalescent # 145-8040
• Choose threads which contrast and compliment colors represented on panel. I used 3 shades of green, 3-4 pinks light, medium, same for each color represented
• Sewing Machine in good working order, feed dog drop, clean
• Know how to adjust tensions and settings for free motion embroidery, change bobbins and fill a bobbin.
• I will provide a prepared small sample for you to practice stitching on in order to eliminate tension problems and choose correct settings
