HOMEWORK to be done before the day of class
• top layer of fabric, batik unreadable print or cotton unreadable print, cut to 18x24. This is your background. You will see little to none of it, so use a color that will be acceptable peeking through your shredded fabric colors.
• thin batting cut to size 22 x28
• backing fabric cut to size 22x 28
Tips
• When choosing your landscape photo please keep it very simple like a forest with a few larger trees
• Fabric: Batiks and cotton solids are best for rotary cut shapes. Printed cotton fabric which when turned over looks white is not a good choice.
• assorted fabrics representing your chosen landscape. Winter grays, blues, mauve & purple
• *Bright* colors are better since they are covered with black tulle netting. Muted colors or matte will recede under the tulle.
Vivid shades of green, yellow orange, red, purple and blue for sky are a few suggestions, make
sure you have at least 2 to 3 color values of each fabric. Select batik fabrics since both sides can
be used and sometimes give you the color value change needed for shading and highlighting.
For trees choose fabric representing tree bark
• refer to your photo or sample and build a landscape from the top downwards
What we will be doing in class
• take tiny pieces of fabrics and sprinkle on top of background fabric 1 inch in from the outer edge of top background fabric, don't pile on too heavily. Each area represented will represent color changes according to your photo
• Using long straight pins, pin through all the layers about 1 “to 11⁄2 “ apart diagonally.
• When its all pinned then stitch around the entire perimeter in order to keep fabric pieces from falling away
• smoke or clear mono-filament thread for quilting the sandwich (3 layers) stitching free motion on the tulle with mono-filament thread. This is used to quilt the sandwich thru all layers holding the tiny shredded pieces of fabric in place. Quilt one area at a time beginning in the middle stitching outwards, I stitch 1/3 or 1⁄4 area at a time. A meandering stitch is fine
• If time allows some thread painting for embellishment; 2 values of color for trees complementing your fabric for contrast
• to highlight trees on one side: white rayon or polyester sheen thread
• dark brown or black for the darker side of tree
• various threads for thread painting which complement and contrast your landscape for added embellishment either Sulky 40 weight rayon for machine embroidery, polyester or decorative thread of your choice. You may also use cotton 50 weight thread for embellishing color of flowers or grasses etc.
• Pieces which are cut with rotary blade are irregular shapes, I use approx. 6 to 10 inch squares, they don't need to be cut exact size.
• (3 together)and cut random size pieces from 1⁄2 to 3⁄4
