Raw-Edge Applique Rag Quilt

Raw-Edge Applique Rag Quilt class -- Join Shannon to learn the basics of rag quilts and raw edge applique to make this fun and versatile quilt. You can applique flowers, snowflakes, hearts, or just about anything else! We will be demonstrating flowers in class, but you're welcome to explore other shapes.

Supplies:

A sewing machine in good working order. A manual for your machine is also always nice to have. A new size 90/14 needle, either "quilting" or "microtex" in your machine as well.
A regular zig-zag foot for your machine
A walking foot for your machine if you have one
A free-motion or darning foot for your machine
Heat-n-Bond lite OR Steam-a-Seam 2, You need about 8 yards of 15" wide for an 80x80 quilt.
100% cotton batting, an appropriate amount for your quilt's finished size. For an 80x80 quilt, we recommend a "queen" size package of request weight batting.
Fabric;
The more the merrier! Bear in mind that rag quilts take a LOT of fabric because you use 1/2" seams, and you are doing the front and back of the quilt at the same time. The class sample is 100 squares that finished 8" each for an 80x80" rag quilt. For a quilt of this size, you need ten fabrics, 1.25yards of each. This will be enough for 100 squares plus the appliqued shapes. Making a smaller or larger quilt? We'll be happy to help you figure out how much fabric you need!
Thread;
You will want a pretty color contrast thread for your quilting and applique as it will all be visible in your finished quilt! A pinky purple was used in the sample quilt. Any good brand of 100% cotton will work.

HOMEWORK:
Please precut your fabric and batting!

All fabric for the squares of your rag quilt need to be precut to 9" square.
All batting needs to be precut to 8" square.
It will be helpful to also precut your applique fabrics to 7" square, as well as cutting your Heat-n-Bond lite OR Steam-a-Seam 2 to 7" square.
We will have time to finish -at least- four squares in class, likely more. Feel free to only bring 20 precut background/backing pieces, 10 batting pieces, and 15 applique fabric squares, and 15 Heat-n-Bond/Steam-a-Seam 2 squares. This will be enough to complete 10 squares of your quilt, which is likely the most you will have time to complete in class. You will do the rest of your squares, piece your squares together, and snip your rag quilt at home. The more times you wash it, the more it "rags" and the better it looks!

In process;

After two washes;

And the professional quilt tester giving the seal of approval;
