Thread Painting with Chris Eichner - "Cavalier Crow"



You will be learning is how to free motion embroider, adjust tension, use metallic thread with correct tension and freemotion "paint" avoiding breakage and create a 3D effect with bobbin work technique.

Supplies: 

- Free motion foot, (also called hopping foot or darning foot) check your manual for correct foot as this is a must to sew free motion
- Muslin, ½ yard
- Sulky “Cut away Plus” or similar non fusible medium weight stabilizer
- small sharp scissors, such as EZ Snip curved scissors
- straight pins
- Topstitch 90/14 or Microtex metallic needle 90/14
- WOOD Embroidery Hoop with screw which will fit under the free motion foot, 6-9 inches, no Larger. Optional, there will be some to borrow in class, but feel free to purchase one to not have to share
- Bobbin Fill: Fill bobbins half full black, cream, medium green and yellow
- Suggested thread; Cotton and Steel 50 weight thread, or Aurifil 50 weight, or Sulky 60 weight
- Polysheen thread to fill bobbin. These threads are lighter weight which prevent pulling of top thread to underside
- Optional sewers aid lubricant for metallic/sliver thread, there will be some available to try in class
- large eye darning needle to bury threads
- marking pen
- small light box or I have two to use
- Optional “The Thread Director” allows the thread to come off spool in a straight line, you may have that option already on your machine. 

- THREADS FOR EMBELLISHING THE PANEL, your choice; suggested:
- Polyester 60 weight, Sulky 30-40 weight, Cotton and Steel 50 weight, Mettler silk finish cotton, or your favorite threads for machine embroidery. Choose your colors to embellish petals, yellow, gold, rust, 3 shades of green for leaves, black, gray blue
- Metallic thread, Sulky Sliver #8040 opalescent
- Sulky Cotton Blendable 30 weight, color 733-4068 and/or 733-4065 this used during bobbin work technique
- Border Fabric of your choice, 1/4-1/2 yd
- Light weight cotton batting
- Backing fabric your choice, 1/2 yd



HOMEWORK:
TO PREPARE FOR CLASS, THIS WILL ENSURE ALL STUDENTS TO BEGIN PROMPTLY

- Cut the panel (crow with close up of sunflower, see sample) away from main panel
-Border this panel with a 4" boorder of muslin. This will not show on the finished project, but will make it easier to work with in class.
- Cut stabilizer to the size of this panel with the added muslin (approx 18x20)
- pin in the four corners to the stabilizer
- Your panel is now ready to begin thread painting
- Instructions will be given out in class

Important:
Your sewing machine should be serviced, you should be able to lower your feed dogs, know how to adjust upper thread tension, and fill bobbins.
